When the contents are worth more than the postage
Most books don't need heavy duty. A paperback in a medium duty wrap arrives fine, and paying for board you don't need is just cost.
Heavy duty earns its place in three situations.
Dense contents. A hardback, an art book or a boxed set concentrates a lot of weight into a small footprint. Under compression in a full sack, the load per square centimetre is far higher than a paperback's, and medium board can deform.
Valuable contents. Signed copies, first editions, collectible vinyl, limited runs. The board costs a fraction of a single damage claim, and a claim isn't just the refund — it's the return postage, the replacement, and a review you can't undo.
Long or rough journeys. Multi-handling networks, international routes, anything going through more than one depot.
If none of those apply, medium duty is the right answer and this page isn't for you.
Reinforced board, and what it actually resists
The failure a book wrap has to survive isn't a drop — it's crush. A parcel at the bottom of a sack or a cage carries everything above it, for hours.
Heavier corrugated resists that in two ways: the liners are stronger, so the face doesn't dish inward, and the flute holds its arch under load instead of collapsing. The scored fold lines then double up at the edges, putting the most board exactly where a book takes damage — the corners and the spine.
The wrap-around construction matters as much as the grade. Because the pack folds to the depth of the contents, there's no void for the book to move into, and no void fill to compress.
Postage: this range is better at Large Letter than you'd expect
Worth being precise, because the assumption catches people out.
Royal Mail's Large Letter band allows 353 × 250mm at 25mm deep, up to 750g. A wrap folds to the contents, so depth is set by what's inside, not by the packaging.
Three of the four sizes here sit inside the 353 × 250mm footprint — more of this range than the medium duty range, because these sizes run smaller. So a slim hardback in a heavy-duty wrap can post at letter rates with more protection than the medium-duty alternative.
The largest size exceeds the 250mm width and posts as a Small Parcel. All four are comfortably inside Small Parcel limits.
Watch the weight, not just the depth. 750g is the Large Letter ceiling and a hardback reaches it easily. Weigh a packed sample before you build a postage assumption around it.
What these suit
- Hardbacks, art books and photography books
- Boxed sets and multi-volume orders
- Vinyl records, singly or in pairs — where a bent corner ruins the sleeve
- Signed, first edition and collectible stock
- Board games and flat boxed goods
- Framed prints and rigid flat items
Choosing a size
Dimensions and pack quantities are in the table below, and the sizes follow standard C-format proportions — worth checking against what you buy now if you're switching supplier.
Size to the footprint; the depth handles itself. That's the point of a wrap. Choose length and width to suit your largest common title and let the fold do the rest.
Note the range runs smaller than our medium duty wraps. If you need a large footprint in a reinforced grade, talk to us — it's a bespoke conversation rather than a stock line.
Buying by the pack
Supplied flat in trade packs with price breaks as quantities increase. The step up from medium to heavy duty is a small per-unit difference and a large difference in what survives the network — for anyone shipping valuable stock, it pays for itself on the first claim avoided.
We buy these as part of a manufacturing group, at volumes a reseller can't reach, and hold them across over 100,000 square feet of warehousing.
