Ventilation, and why it decides whether flowers arrive alive

Cut flowers respire in transit. In a sealed box, moisture and ethylene build up around the blooms, and the result is wilting, browning at the petal edges and premature opening — the damage that generates the complaint even when the box itself arrives undamaged.

These boxes carry ventilation holes at the ends to keep air moving through the arrangement. It's a small detail that separates a flower box from a long box, and it's the reason a general-purpose mailer of the same dimensions isn't a substitute.

The rest of the design follows the same logic: rigid enough to resist crushing in a sorting frame, light enough not to add to your postage, and flat-packed so a peak-season stock holding doesn't fill your workroom.

Postage: what this box is, and what it isn't

Worth being direct, because getting this wrong is expensive.

This is a parcel-rate box, not a Large Letter box. Royal Mail's Large Letter band caps at 353 × 250 × 25mm. A long-stem bouquet box exceeds that on length before you consider depth, so it is priced as a parcel by every UK carrier.

It may still post through a letterbox, depending on the aperture — and that is a separate benefit worth having. Letterbox delivery means no missed delivery card, no redelivery fee and no disappointed recipient waiting in. For a time-sensitive floral gift that matters more than most categories. Check the depth against the letterboxes you actually deliver to, because UK apertures vary and this is a snug fit rather than a generous one.

If your business model depends on Large Letter rates, you need a box inside 353 × 250 × 25mm — which means short-stem posies, not long-stem bouquets. Talk to us before you standardise; it's a different product, not a different size of this one.

What fits

Built for arrangements with length rather than bulk:

• Long-stem bouquets — roses, lilies, gladioli, delphiniums
• Hand-tied posies where the stems are left long
• Dried and preserved arrangements, which travel well and don't need the ventilation as urgently but benefit from the crush resistance
• Pampas, eucalyptus and foliage stems
• Single-stem gifting and letterbox-style subscription boxes

For short bouquets and compact posies, a shorter format is cheaper to post and wastes less space. For anything needing depth rather than length — vase arrangements, hat-box style gifts — this isn't the right shape.

Peak season, and the mistake florists make

Your volume is not spread evenly. Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Christmas will account for a disproportionate share of the year's dispatch, and packaging is the thing most often left until last.

Two practical points:

Order peak stock early and store it flat. These arrive flat-packed, so a peak-season quantity takes far less space than the equivalent made-up boxes. Running out of boxes in the week before Mother's Day is a self-inflicted wound.

The board is made by our own manufacturing group rather than bought in, so when Valentine's and Mother's Day demand lands we're scheduling our own production instead of queuing behind someone else's customers. Tell us your peak volumes in advance and we'll hold stock against them.

Test your pack time before peak, not during it. Peel-and-seal closure is quick, but the difference between a practised fold and a first attempt is real when you're packing hundreds in a day.

Buying by the pack

Supplied flat-packed in trade packs, with price breaks as pack quantities increase. Prices exclude VAT.

For most florists this is a single-format product — you either send long-stem bouquets by post or you don't. Concentrate the volume rather than splitting it, and the break price does the rest.

Practical detail

Kraft brown corrugated, supplied flat with peel-and-seal closure for tape-free packing. The surface takes labels, direct print and custom branding cleanly — "Fresh Flowers Inside" or care instructions print well and reduce handling damage. Fully recyclable and plastic-free, which matters to the gifting customer more than to most.
