Description

Paper padded number plate bags and envelopes for UK plate makers, motor factors, garages and online traders. Also called number plate envelopes, padded plate mailers or licence plate bags. Plastic-free honeycomb kraft padding, peel-and-seal closure, supplied in trade packs.

Sized for a standard UK plate, and what that means in practice

A standard UK oblong registration plate is 520 × 111mm. This bag is 535 × 180mm, which gives clearance on both dimensions without leaving the plate room to slide.

That fit matters more on a plate than on most products. An acrylic plate is rigid and thin, so it doesn't crush — it scratches, and it snaps at the corners. Both failure modes come from movement inside the packaging, not from impact. A bag sized close to the plate stops the movement, which is most of the job.

It takes a pair of plates together comfortably, which is how most orders ship.

What it doesn't suit: square and 4×4 plates, motorcycle plates, and American-import formats are all much shorter, and they'll move around in a 535mm bag. If you ship those regularly, tell us what sizes you need — it's a straightforward bespoke conversation.

Honeycomb kraft padding, and why plastic-free suits this trade

The padding is honeycomb kraft — die-cut paper that expands into hexagonal cells. It cushions by collapsing progressively and, usefully here, it grips: the plate doesn't slide inside the bag the way it can inside a smooth-lined mailer.

There's no bubble film, so the whole thing goes into paper recycling without the customer separating anything. For a trade where a lot of orders go to private buyers and small garages, that's one less thing that ends up in general waste.

On protection, honestly: honeycomb is very good against scratching, scuffing and the pressure of a full post sack. It is not armour. A plate that takes a direct blow on a corner can still crack, and if you're shipping high-value show plates or bespoke 4D work, a rigid outer is the safer choice.

Postage: this is a Medium Parcel, and it's worth knowing why

Being direct about this, because getting it wrong is expensive at volume.

At 535mm long, a number plate bag exceeds Royal Mail's Small Parcel limit of 450mm and is priced as a Medium Parcel. It cannot qualify as a Large Letter at any thickness — that band caps at 353mm, and the length disqualifies it before depth is considered.

Anyone quoting you letter or small-parcel rates on a full-size plate is describing something that doesn't exist. Plate length is the constraint and no packaging solves it.

Two practical consequences:

Compare carriers, not bands. Once you're in parcel territory, the difference between Royal Mail, Evri and DPD on a light, long, low-value parcel is where the saving is — not in trying to squeeze a band you can't reach.

Ship pairs. Two plates weigh little more than one and go in the same bag at the same postage. If a customer is ordering front and rear, one parcel is roughly half the carriage of two.

Who buys these

  • Registered number plate suppliers on the DVLA RNPS register
  • Motor factors and garages posting replacement plates
  • Show plate and 4D plate makers selling online
  • eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree sellers
  • Trade counters dispatching to account customers

Also suits other long, flat items — trim strips, badges, small signage, rulers, blade guards.

Buying by the pack

Supplied in trade packs with price breaks as quantities increase. One size covers standard oblong plates, singly or in pairs, so most operations buy this line alone rather than splitting across formats.

The kraft surface takes labels and direct print cleanly. If you dispatch in volume, a printed outer carrying your name and "Number Plate Enclosed" is worth considering — it reduces mishandling and it's one of the cheaper pieces of branding available to a trade seller. We quote on printed and bespoke sizes as part of a manufacturing group.
